SAN JOSE, CA, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- With the extended filing deadline just two days away, TaxZerone is urging trustees, fiduciaries, and tax professionals to complete and submit Form 5227, Split-Interest Trust Information Return, for tax year 2025. Trusts that requested an automatic six-month extension using Form 8868 in April must file by Thursday, October 15, 2026.

TaxZerone encourages eligible trustees and tax professionals to prepare and submit their returns early rather than waiting until the final days, helping them avoid last-minute filing challenges and ensure their required information is submitted on time.

October 15, 2026, Is the Extended Deadline
For calendar-year trusts, the original due date for the 2025 Form 5227 was April 15, 2026. Trustees who filed Form 8868 by that date received an automatic six-month extension, moving the filing deadline to October 15, 2026.

Two points deserve attention:
✔️ There is no second automatic extension. Form 8868 provides one automatic six-month extension for Form 5227. Trusts that miss October 15 are considered late.
✔️ The extension applies to filing, not payment. Any tax owed, including taxes reported on related forms, was generally due by the original due date. Interest and penalties may apply to unpaid amounts.

Form 5227 is generally filed for each calendar year. For a final short-year period, the return is generally due by the 15th day of the 4th month following the date of the trust's termination.

What Is Form 5227? & Who Must File?
Form 5227 is the annual Split-Interest Trust Information Return used by certain charitable remainder trusts, pooled income funds, and other split-interest trusts that meet the applicable IRS filing requirements under Internal Revenue Code Section 4947(a)(2).

The following generally must file Form 5227:
✔️ Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts (CRATs)
✔️ Charitable Remainder Unitrusts (CRUTs), including NIMCRUTs, FLIPCRUTs, and NICRUTs
✔️ Charitable Lead Trusts (CLATs and CLUTs) that meet the split-interest trust definition
✔️ Pooled Income Funds

Trustees, trust officers, CPAs, enrolled agents, attorneys, and family office professionals who prepare returns for these entities should confirm filing status now.

Form 5227 Filing Requirements
Preparing Form 5227 requires trustees and tax professionals to gather and report information about the trust's financial activities and distributions.
✔️ Trust identification information, including the trust's name, EIN, and type of split-interest trust
✔️ Financial information, including income, deductions, gains and losses, and distributions for the tax year
✔️ Balance sheet information, including beginning and ending asset values at fair market value
✔️ Distribution details, including amounts paid to noncharitable beneficiaries and charitable organizations
